Park track damaged by 4WD vehicle

Department of Conservation staff are concerned that a four wheel dri ve vehicle had been driven the full length of the Waihiohonu Track from the Desert Road to Waihohonu Hut. Staff said the vehicle did a significant amount of damage to track-side native vegetation as well as smashing several track marker poles. "The vehicle also damaged the track surface which will result in further erosion by water scouring on steeper sections," said regional conservator Paul Green. Staff have some information on those responsible but are seeking further details from members of the public who may have seen a four wheel drive vehicle on the track between 25 - 27 March. Vehicles are prohibited off formed roads within the Tongariro National Park under the National Parks Act. "'Vehicles' includes mountain bikes and illegal use of these on tracks such as Waihohonu is increasing," said Mr Green.
