The College athletic sports provided a recent highlight but because of bad weather were spread over a period of three days. Although the format was different it did not hinder individuals from excelling and individual champions were: Junior Boys, J Mackay and R Hampo; Junior Girls, D Cranston and J Martin; Intermediate Boys, L Cast and J Hays; Intermediate Girls, C Oh and T Clark; Senior Boys, S Goldfinch and W Sutton; Senior Girls, R Mowat and D Waerea. A team of about 45 students who were chosen to represent the college at the Wanganui regional athletic meeting were given extra coaching by two professionals, New Zealand middle distance runner, Peter Conder and Scott Newman, a sprints and triple-jump expert. On the day, because of more bad weather, the college team had to retufn home early. For the first time in 22 years organisers were forced to cancel the meet. Much interest was generated by the Disabled Athletic Sports which gave senior students an idea of what it is like to be disabled. Shaun McDonough in a wheel-chair was the inaugural record-holder of the medicine ball put with a throw of 17.91 metres. Leonard Pierere and his guide dashed around the 40-metre blind-sprint course in the best time of 1 1.21 seconds. Tony Prince, Scott Goldfinch and Lindsay Cast all cleared 1 .45 metres in the knee-amputee high 'hop'. Two All Black celebrities, Steve Gordon and Robyn Brooke visited the school recently to talk about the value of sport, balancing school work with sport and the importarice of setting goals and striving to achieve them. Students seized the opportunity to win prizes offered by CocaCola. The Tennis Championships have been completed. In the finals Craig Dolman and Lee McCann were the champions of the night over Lindsay Cast and Evania Rennie

respectively. Supporters including students and parents enjoyed a fine evening's tennis. The Wanganui S wimming regionals were held at Marton this year with a strong 16-member team from Ruapehu College. Intermediate swimmer Jan de Moor was placed second in both the 50m freestyle and butterfly events and third in the 100m freestyle. Justin Mackay gained third place in the junior 100m back-stroke and Tina McFadyen earned second place in the intermediate dive. On 4 March Waiouru parents with Form One and Two students were invited for an evening at Ruapehu College. Following a brief welcome by principal H Cast, parents toured the school with staff. Supper was served and the evening provided many opportunities for useful parentteacherdiscussion. Further support meetings with Waiouru parents are planned. F Taku, A Witikaka, A Te Huia, A Mariekura, T Prince and C Perkins-Teki have begun taking part in the Multiple Studies Work Experience programme to gain insight into what being in the work-force is like. Students are participating in diverse occupations ranging from agriculture to child-care. Employers interested in taking part in this scheme are asked to.contact Peter Matheson on 385-8398. Six volunteers co-ordinated 26 students to collect money for the Multiple Sclerosis Four Leaf Clover Appeal. They were successful in raising $1 160. Collecting was done in Waiouru, Raetihi and Ohakune with 1 1 successful winners in the local region.
