Council transfers roads funds

A war between bitumen suppliers has meant the council has money left over from some road works projects which it could transfer to other projects. Some of the money could be transferred to projects which were running over budget. The Ruapehu District Council approved the transfer of funds between work categories at their last meeting. A total of $202,565 was transferred from categories inciuding the subsidised reseals programme, the revoked state highway general maintenance, special purpose road sealed smoothing, and general maintenance south rural. Projects to benefit from the transfer mcluded: revoked state highway reseals; special purpose road reseals; general maintenance north urban; bridge repairs north urban; and bridge repairs south urban. Major works expected to be carried out before the end of the financial year (which will utilise excess fundi) included bridge repairs to: Dreadnought Road, Ohakune, bridge near Carter's Mill ($25,000); Ruapehu Road, Ohakune, bridges are to have deck units replaced and/or properly fixed, and beams sandblasted and painted ($60,000; Mangateitei Road bridge is being repaired to •alleviate flexing problems caused by overloaded trucks. The weight restriction is to be removed.
