Raetihi school news
by Jennifer Griffiths and Emma Forster Today Raetihi Primary School pupils are having their class and individual photos taken. The teachers will also have their photo taken together. On Wednesday Raetihi School are sending their top swimmers to Waiouru to compete in the interschool swimming sports. Twenty two pupils from Raetihi will compete in this event, ranging from junior to senior. Raetihi School' s gala turned out to be a great success, as nearly everything was sold within the first half-hour. Once again the pony and fire-engine rides turned out to be very popular. There were also some very happy people who went home with some great prizes from the spin-the-wheel game. School principal Mr Fountain was the speaker for this game and he enjoyed himself. Just over $4500 was raised which will go towards something for the children of the school. The lucky people whose names were drawn out of the gold box for the reward system were Tania Hanson, Natasha Fowlie and Kate Woodhouse. They will now receive a $2 voueher tj> use in the school canteen or for stationery. Some of the schools' teachers have entered into a couple of contracts which are taking place in Palmerston North. Mrs Taylor has already been to a science course and some other teachers are going to a maths course. Hopefully this means lots of neat science and maths for pupils. On the weekend of 1 2- 1 3 March the culture group went to Manu Ariki to perform in a competition and we wish them the best of luck for the rest of the year. Earlier this month the school started a new behaviour incentive programme in which the children are rewarded for good behaviour with special treats. Mr Fountain, is very pleased with the children' s behaviour. Rooms 13, 12, 1 1 and 15 have recently started a project on farms and were to visit a farm. Room 1 5 has already been to the Anderson's farm and looked at calves, tried shearing and gone to the top of a very high hill from which they could see Raetihi, Ohakune and Waipuna. Rooms 6, 7 and 8 have finished a study on bees by getting Mr Penny to come in and show them how to extract honey from the comb. They also kept live bees in their class. The Senior School are running kiwi sports. This is a five-week course of five different sports which are golf, orienteering, tennis, cricket and softball.
