Health group president elected

By

Michele

Monaghan

The Waiouru Community Health Group formally voted in Phil Gardyne as their Chairman and Sue Harrison as the secretary on 17 March. Following the election the group went on to discuss two main issues: visits to Waiouru by an obstetrician; and the maternity services issue. Mrs Harrison told the meeting that Julie Foley, Manager of maternity services for Good Health Wanganui (GHW), has said obstetric services shouldbe made more flexible. Ms Foley had said that the community may have been wrongly informed that the obstetrician would visit once a month. Mrs Harrison reported that Ms Foley believed the visits should be once a fortnight and that if the demand was there, visits would be made more frequently. The health group is still

concerned about maternity services for Waiouru. A recent case of a woman in labour not being able to contact a midwife was highlighted. Mrs Harrison said there is a need for women to document anything that goes wrong with the service, and that she would be a point of contact for such women. The group discussed the fact that they expect teething problems with the new system, and don't wish to appear vindictive in documenting things going wrong. They also said that staff concerned should be approached and given a chance to explain. Sue Hine, of the Central Regional Health Authority (CRHA), said people could complain straight to GHW, but the group would like to keep their finger on the pulse so to speak, and would appreciate people directing their queries through Mrs Harrison.

The health group will be sending out a questionnaire to all Waiouru residents to gather information on the needs of the community, with regard to maternity services. When all the information is gathered a submission will be sent to CRHA on services required for Waiouru. Mr Gardyne says he believes that GHW has agreed that Waiouru is a special needs community and is different from other towns.
