Raetihi lifestyle pleases new doctor
Raetihi is a long way from Manila's slums and exactly where new resident doctor Jo Ward wants to be. The quiet country life
appeals to Jo who recently returned from Manila where she lived in squatters slums for three years. The experience was both unpleasant
and rewarding according to Jo, who went with a contingent of Christian youth workers. During her stay she suc-
cessfully launched a community clinic for the poor and trained four local women in basic medical procedures. Another of her successes was the formation of several childrens' health clubs which educated youngsters about hygiene practices and personal health care. Upon her return to New Zealand Jo settled in Dunedin but was undecided as to where she would set up a practice. Having practised in Raetihi as a locum for Dr Jim Corbett on two former occasions and had "loved it", Jo was quick to take up the offer of a shared practice with Dr Corbett whom she has known since training college. The two doctors will share duties on Monday mornings - traditionally a busy time at the surgery, with Jo conducting Friday and Tuesday clinics. Jo has already immersed herself in the community and enrolled at Ruapehu College to learn Maori. She is keen to become involved in Maori health in the district, particularly in com-munity-based health care and education.
