Karitane nurse retires

The close contact between mothers and babies is what Waimarino Karitane Nurse, Lesley Proude, will miss the most when she retires this month. Mrs Proude began as this area's Mobile Karitane Nurse in April 1986. These past eight years she describes as the

hardest years of her life, having endured the deaths of two members of her immediate family. Taking up the position of receptionist/nurse at the Raetihi doctor' s surgery means more flexible hours in order to work the family farm and spend more time with her family. During her time as Karitane Nurse Mrs Proude travelled many thousands of kilometres around the district, visiting mothers and babies who were experiencing difficulties associated with breast feeding, eating, sleeping, or behavioural problems. Another facet was that of support to parents of unwell children, and care-giver for unwell parents. Mrs Proude is grateful for the support given her by Plunket during the past eight years. She is also extremely appreciative of the care and support proffered by the community in recent months, during what she terms as a "sad time" in her life. Of Plunket Nurse Carole Harford, Mrs Proude said she and Carole worked weli together on a professional level, and parted "as friends." A highlight of the job was the monthly training visit to Wanganui where they and other health professionals would gather and exchange views. Mrs Proude's position was advertised locally, with five applicants being interviewed last week. Mrs Proude said she will continue to carry out private caring if there is a need in this area. The Ohakune-Raetihi combined Plunket committees plan to hold a low-key farewell for Mrs Proude next week.
