Call to keep Jubilee Park
• The following is a letter from very concerned retailers re- Jubilee Park: □ As there is already a popular established children' s playground in Jubilee Park that is used all the time by both the local and travelling public, with a little extra tender love and care a further playground is not a necessity at present in the community and would be wasting ratepayers' money. □ There is no other suitable public green-area so close to the centre of the township that can provide the same spacious restful area as Christie Park. □ The unnecessary addition of swings, slides etc would detract from its present natural, peaceful beauty. □ Christie Park is regularly used by our teenagers and youth to practice their touch rugby, etc* and so gives them "a safe area to let-off harmless steam. □ Having the two parks as they are keeps the two age groups separated and one does not intimidate the other. □ As this is a public amenity it should serve the whole of the general public and be best situated where it i s likely to attract the most use of the local and passing public and be of the maximum benefit to everyone. If the present playground were to be abolished the resiting would not attract the travelling public to stop in Ohakune the same way as the present playground in Jubilee Park does. □ As it would appear to be the wish of only the Waimarino Plunket Society and the Health Watch committee perhaps they could provide their own amenities on their own front lawn in Goldfinch Street and even extend it to the empty section next door and perhaps improve that corner of the town if they feel the need should be there. Should there be a need for another children' s playground perhaps the carrot site could be considered as an alternative. Whereever or what ever, please do not clutter our village-green .in Christie Park and do not down-grade our present playground in Clyde Street, Jubilee Park. Ohakune is supposedly trying to up-grade and improve its tourist image, not down-grade it and families passing through Ohakune may stop and inspect the town if there is somewhere adjacent to the rnain road and local shops. They will not be tempted to drive up a side street and leave their children while they check out the attractions of the area at the information centre 5- 1 0 minutes walk away . Do those objectors realise the impact of our Clyde Street recreation park on our survivalfor 'summer retail' for Ohakune? Once it is gone, we won' t
local projects first and $385,000 will go a good way towards achieving that goal.
