Abseiling camp a success
Sliding, flying and dangling were the order of the weekend for 17 local Scouts who had travelled to the old Carnarvon School, just south of Sanson recently. The occasion was an inter-district camp for 43 Scouts from Ohakune, Bulls, Marton and Palmerston North. The highlight of the camp was the abseiling tower and after some initial trepidation, all the scouts conquered their fears and the tower. After the first attempt many adopted a 'been there, done that' attitude while others, at first terrified, could not wait to climb the tower for another try. Other activities to keep them busy were a flying fox and obstacle course, horizontal bungy and swimming in the Rangitikei River. For many of the Ohakune Scouts, this was their first camp. In fact six of them had only been in
Scouts for three weeks. As a result of the recent surge in interest in the Kea and Cub sections of the local group both have had to instigate waiting lists for other children wanting to join as they have reached their maximum numbers. Fund raising by the Scouts saving for a trip to California is progressing well. Recent activities include the clearing of eight and a half hectares of pinus contorta, section clearing, hall painting in Raetihi, supplying a truck-load of sheep manure to a local gardener and stalls and raffles at the Raetihi Show and Karioi Sports Day. Scout leader Grant Hays said they are really working hard to achieve their goal. Any offers of work will be gratefully appreciated, he added.
