Busy time on the Whanganui River
Large numbers of school pupils are visiting the Whanganui National Park while the summer weather holds out. A party of 50 was accommodated at Tieke Hut last week and two other large groups of between 40 and 50 are making their way downstream from Taumarunui. Wanganui schools are also canoeing the river from Pipiriki downward. The river is low and cloudy after recent rain. Some of the side streams feeding into the river are particularly dirty after localised downpours. A group of international volunteers is beginning to arri ve for hut warden duties in the national park. One from Germany has already arrived and others from Australia and America are expected in the next week. Construction work on the Matemateaonga Track has been completed for the season and the work gang is moving to Trains Track in the Waitotara Forest Park.
