Waiouru burn-off soon
A burn-off of about 90 hectares of land adjoining the W aiouru defence area i s planned for early thi s month, weather permitting. The area to be burnt is on Ohinewairua station, which backs directly on to Zone 28 of the Army Training Group land. A similar burn in 1982 got out of control mainly due to wind changes, said Morrie Edwards of Fire
Plans. Mr Edwards is an exarmy firemaster and is in charge of this burn off. Mr Edwards explained that with the technology now, weather patterns are predicted more accurately. People are more aware of the changing wind patterns and will use this knowledge to plan the burn off. The burn off area consists of mainly felled scrub and pig fern. Some
Monowai i s also to be burnt. The root structure of the Monowai plant can catch on fire and spread the fire underground, said Mr Edwards. Fires can pop up any where, so the use of fire retardants and suppressants, dropped by aeroplane and helicopter will be used to help keep guch fires in check. He said he is the only person in New Zealand to use this technique.
