Red Cross appeal for funds
The New Zealand Red Cross Society is holding its annual Red Cross Week from 28 February to 6 March, to highlight the work of the organisation world- wide. Apart from regular involvement in disaster relief and humanitarian relief, Red Cross is also active in highlighting need and suffering all over the world. There are very few incidents involving serious loss of life or conflict where the Red Cross is not present providing food, medical treatment, shelter and other support. Recent examples include the Los Angeles earthquake, the conflict in what was Yugoslavia and faniine relief in Africa. The Waimarino Branch continues to provide first aid training, as well .as being available for emergency relief when required by Civil Defence. The other purpose of Red Cross Week is an appeal for funds - the only one opportunity for the public to contribute. This year, changes in the administrative structure of the organisation in New Zealand to reduce the number of administrators means that more finance than usual will be needed to develop new regional centres. The money will be used for international projects and relief, setting up the new systems in New Zealand and in the local area. This year, collections will take place in most areas of the Waimarino. In Ohakune collectors will call on Saturday 5 March. In Raetihi, donations will be collected by committee member John Triggell during normal milk delivery hours. Rural Delivery residents can give their envelopes and donations to E Rush or G Fredricksen. Donation boxes will also be available at local chemists.
