Tongariro Mt Classic in March

Next month it is hoped that 50 athletes and 30 teams from around the country will take part in the Tongariro Mountain Classic, the only multi-sport event to be held in Tongariro National Park. The event was previously called the Turangi Triathlon. This years' event, which will coincide with the Turangi Day festival, is being organised as a joint venture between the SirEdmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre, the Department of Conservation, Turangi Lions Club and the Tongariro

Enterprise and Development Board. The race circuit is challenging and will see competitors cycle over the Te Ponanga saddle, run over the Tongariro Crossing, kayak down the Tongariro River and into Lake Taupo and then jog back to Turangi. Entries for the T ongariro Mountain close at 12 March , 1994. Entry forms are available from Greg Carlyon, Department of Conservation, Private Bag, Turangi and the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre, Private Bag, Turangi.
