Ruapehu dream comes true

A long-time dream to take up residence in the Ruapehu region recently became a reality for re-patriated New Zealander Peter Matheson, the newest member of staff at Ruapehu College. Mr Matheson, who recently returned to this country after a 17-year stint in Australia, said he fell in love with the region while on a skiing trip in 1970. "I decided I was going to live here some day", he said.

After 10 years teaching at secondary school level in Canberra and a further seven years in Darwin where the closest centre is at least fi ve hours dri ve away , Mr Matheson is unconcerned about the Ruapehu region' s comparative isolation. He is currently exploring building alternatives for his three and a half acre property on Raetihi Road, and enjoying the scenic attractions the region has to offer. Mr Matheson became teacher in charge of Ruapehu College' s multi-studies programme and involved with careers and transition predominantly at fifth and sixth form level, at the beginning of the term.
