Visiting school psychologist retires

Ohakune Primary School is temporarily without the services of a visiting psychologist with the retirement of long-time professional Barry Fry. The Wanganui-based psychologist made his final visit to the school last week after 13 years' service to the area. Although retiring from the Education Department's Special Education Services division, Mr Fry

intends to operate a private practice in Wanganui. Mr Fry said parents can still request that their children be referred to him, until such time that a replacement is found. Ohakune School Principal Ellen Gould said Mr Fry's regular visits will be sadly missed by parents and particularly staff who considered him a friend as well as colleague. In earlier years Mr Fry worked closely with the school' s special education class. With the advent of Tomorrow's Schools and cuts in funding in recent years, his once-monthly visits to the school were scaled down to a handful of visits a year. Until his retirement last week Mr Fry took referrals from a large number of schools in the wider. Ruapehu region.
