Success in America for Ruapehu skier

Whakapapa ski team member Layton Thomson finished second overall and second in his age class in the first of two South Series (USA points) giant slalom races for juniors held during the weekend at Park City, Utah. The following day Thomson finished out of the first three after setting second fastest time in the first run. Thomson, a member of Whakapapa Race Team, has trained and raced for the past 10 weeks with members of Rowmark Ski Academy, Salt Lake City. His race programme got off to a slow start with the postponement of a number of races in December because ofinsufficientsnow. Atthebeginningof January, Thomson was among the youngest competitors chasing FIS points in the prestigious Utah Technical Series. Later on 15-16 January at another South Series event held kt Snowbird Thomson scored a second and third in his age class in two slalom races. Thomson retumed to New Zealand on Wednesday 9 February to attend sixth form at Sacred Heart College in Auckland.
