"We'll Keep you running"—Koi Young & Sons tyres and mechanical repairs.
Earthmoving full steam ahead
Dale Young - a qualified fitter & turner - machinist - looks after both the
tyre services and the mechanical workshop, co-ordinating the activities in both.
There will be no slowing down on the earthmoving side of things. The company will continue to offer a complete service, for subdivision work, road works, farm works such as drainage and track work, and building site excavation and preparation work. They work with the best laser-controlled level systems to ensure the best job possible for drain and sewer laying, and that technology, coupled with skilled drivers, provides the best quality work for site preparations for all jobs. They can provide most grades of metal from their pit on Willie Chan Limited's property in Tohunga Road. Their machinery for hire line-up consists of most types of earthmoving equipment including loaders, hoist trucks, tracked excavators, wheeled rubber-tyre excavators, bobcats, and grader - not, of course, forgetting the still very useful 'banjo'. This allows them to take on the large earthmoving contracts as well as the smallest urban job. At present they are working on the Miro Street, Ohakune reconstruction work, and they have recently completed a contract for Transit New Zealand for water tabling 150km of roads between Gisborne and Napier. Also available is a heavy haiilage service using a 3-axle tilt-deck low loader, capable of carrying large loads including small buildings up to nine metres long. Hamish McDonnell shows his skills on diggers, having been driving machines for almost seven years, including diggers, loaders and graders. Keeping the contracts going Kenneth Young is the earthmoving contracts manager, as well as driving machinery himself . He has been driving for about 12 years, working on a wide range of projects including the Main Trunk Line electrification project. One job involved lowering the Raurimu Spiral tunnels and laying fibre optic cable through the spiral - the toughest section on the whole line. Koi and Kenneth remember a 'highlight' of that job being when their 15 tonne tracked excavator was hit by two diesel locomotives pulling 13 ballast wagons. "The excavator hobbled away, but the two locomotives had to be towed away," said Koi.
