Be there for big bikes

They won't know until the day, but there could be more than 100 Ulysses Club members taking part in the Waimarino A&P Show Grand Parade this Saturday Already there are 40 people booked to come and that means 20 to 30 of the magnificent elitemodel motorcycles ridden by the over-40s motorcycle enthusiasts. Bikes ridden will include the bigger BMWs, Honda

Goldwings, Harley Davidsons and others. "They say some treat them (their bikes) better than their wives," said organiser Ian Stewart. (No doubt the female riders treat their machines better than their husbands - you'll have to get along and ask them!) The ride is called the 'Mashed Murphy and Chips' invitation ride, and attracts riders from far and wide. The name comes from the potato

growing that goes on around the area. "Club members are really keen on this ride, which is at the invitation of the Waimarino Rest Home Trust. Motorcycle riders are not often invited anywhere!" said Ian. Ulysses Club riders are not your average motorcyclists - they don't all do it in the dirt and they don't wear patches and that sort of thing. They are all over 40 (some a lot over 40) and just enjoy riding powerful touring motorcycles - ones that often look more like motorised armchairs. The riders will meet at Ohakune at 12.30pm on Saturday and ride to Raetihi to join the parade at 1.00pm.
