Design, events and friends for 'Winning Waimarino'
A design presented to the Mainstreet group last Thursday could be used on all promotional clothing for the Waimarino area. The group discussed the design, which features a
montage of colourful pictures of various activities common in the area. Mainstreet co-ordinator Sue Allomes suggested that a number of T-shirts be printed with the design on the back, to be worn by the various groups who travel to trade shows promoting the region. Each group could have their own logo, such as the Winning Waimarino or Ski Ruapehu groups on the front of the T - shirts. After some discussion it was decided to look further into the idea, with the design accepted with some modifications to include forestry, deer and pig hunting, and railways. Business development is one of the objectives "set down for the Mainstreet project, and the group put together a list of possible
courses that could be run in the area to help business people. They included financial advice, business skills, tourism related courses, retail skills, customer service, computers and business. It was suggested they could be run as a series of day or night lectures and people could chose to go to all, several or a few. Organising or helping to organise promotional events is also an objective. The group put down a number of current annual events plus numerous ideas for events, then discussed the merits of them. The general consensus was that it was better to try to run a few larger, successful events than several smaller ones. Joanna Savage from Turn to Page 20
