Raetihi deluged

The main street of Raetihi, and several businesses, were awash after a freak deluge on Friday evening. The skies opened just before 6pm, dropping approximately 33mm of rain in around 30 minutes. An ensuing hailstorm with stones the size of marbles had pedestrians running to find shelter under shop verandahs. Retailers were caught unawares, with staff from several businesses in upper Seddon Street having to mop up when the water rose. Those same businesses were still drying out as of yesterday. There were no reports of damaged stock however. The rain also wreaked havoc with the town's lines of communication, putting phone lines out of action for well over an hour. Residents are likening the localised cloud-burst to a similar phenomena in the late 1 940' s when Raetihi's main street was under water.
