Great summer leads to great flower show

After cancelling last year due to a poor showing of flowers caused by a bad summer, this year's Waimarino Dahlia Show provided a near-record number of entries. Thi s y ear the problem for growers was the heat which can hinder the growth of the petals at the back Of the flower, affecting its shape. Last year frost, wind and rain were the problems. Show judge Roger McDonald, from Delightful Dahlias in Wanganui, said the standard of the show was very good with a lot of colour and a lot of blooms. He said he enjoyed the relaxed nature of the show - in contrast to the formal nature of the national show in Palmerston North which he also helped judge. Mr McDonald commented on the number of older varieties of flower in the Waimarino show, which are seldom seen any more in shows and even in shops. "It would be very interesting to find out the history of those blooms." Results of Dahlia Show 13 February: Champion Bloom, Merrilyn George. Points Prize, Merrilyn George.
