Raetihi mowing standard down

The standard of council mowing in the Waimarino over Christmas was unacceptable, according to Waimarino Community Board member Bob Peck. But Ruapehu Construction Limited chairman Garrick Workman believes while the standard at Christmas was low, the standard in Raetihi and Ohakune was now better than Taumarunui, where RCL was not the contractor. Mr Workman told the Waimarino Community Board last Thursday that the mowing done at Christmas was unacceptable and that, although he did not accept the reasons given for the poor standard, he had been assured the slip would not happen again. The board heard that area engineer Don Sattler was the person to contact if people had complaints. Board chairman Colin Webb said people were confused by what was happening, with trucks labelled "RCL" around town. "The problem is people don' t know what the set-up is." Mr Workman said the changes which have seen much of council' s work contracted out, have been well-publi-cised. • "When a company (RCL) downsizes and then overextends itself by taking on more contracts, and then blames the workers for not getting things done, it is not acceptable," said Bob Peck. Mr Workman said there was still a problem in the rural areas with vegetation control.
