Waimarino Weekly reports...
Looking back through the pages of the six-page Waimarino Weekly from Wednesday 31 January 1978, controversy was rife over the up-coming premier of the movie "Skin Deep" which was made in Raetihi. People were unhappy at the ticket price of $20 which covered the movie and a champagne and cabaret evening, plus a donation to local charities including playground equipment for Raetihi School. Lewis Haitana showed off his 17 poundeel, winning the Ohakune Sports & Gifts Centre competition. Ruapehu College was 'under new management' with new principal John Kennedy and senior master Ian Meredith was appointed deputy principal. Fundraising for the Ohakune Swimming Baths had i slOwed down, with only $3000 saved towards the $60,000 target. The Carrot Growers Association had offered a substantial sum, but wanted to know what the money was to be used for first. 'Thursday ' s Child' reported that earthworks had started on the 50 acre block which AHI (Turoa) were developing as a tourist centre. "It's interesting to see those mounds of | earth being raised. Traditionally New Zealanders have flattened their sites before building on them." 'Thursday' s Child' also called for thought into the planning of Ohakune's Commercial Centre (where was Mainstreet? - Editor). "No doubt the frequently-voiced 'burn it all down' has occurred to you". Also reported was the news that a 'welter of ski hire j places' were planned - 'four new ones at last count'. Winners of the local disco championships, William Taylor (under 12s), Kerry Brown (under 16s) and John Anderson (open) were announced. A photo page was published illustrating a story about an open day at the Rangipo Underground Power Station construction site. They expected to have the station ! producting power by 1982, the Weekly reported. EDITOR'S NOTE: Thanks to Errol Vincent for supplying the file issues of the Waimarino Weekly - the Bulletin's predecessor. We'd very much like to know more about the history of newspapers in this area. If anyone has information about the names and starting and finishing dates of previous newspapers serving the area, or who has copies of old newspapers, we'd love to hear from you.
