Police promised help with patients
With an average of five or six call-outs to deal with mentally ill patients per year in the Waimarino, the recent spell where police were called to three cases in three weeks was unusual. That is according to Good Health Wanganui mental health services manager Chris O'Brien-Smith. She was replying to police concerns about the number of call-outs and lack of support for the police from Wanganui. "At present our usual mental health service for the Waimarino consists of a nurse who spends two days in the area once a week," said Ms O'Brien Smith. "However our crisis team in Wanganui will make contact with the local police and when there is a problem in the Waimarino, the team will go up there and bring the patient back to Wanganui." She said Good Health Wanganui had met with Wanganui police to discuss the problem and that they would work together to improve the situation.
