Waimarino scholars in winning line-up
Waimarino scholars figured prominently in the lineup of graduates from the recent W anganui Poly technic prize-giving, held at the Avenue Motor Inn last month. Five Waimarino people - Sue Blackburn, Bill Scobie, Graham Moore, Francis Hodgson and Bev Kerr - received their NZIM Certificate of Supervisory Management after obtaining passes in eight modules held over the past five years in the Waimarino region. The modules included marketing, principles of organisation, financial services, basic economics, industrial relations, introduction to computers, communications and human resource development. The courses can be undertaken as part of the NZIM Certificate or as a 'one off for those just interested in a particular sub-
ject. Six courses on The LiquorLicence Act 1989' have been successfully completed enabling participants to make application to the Ruapehu District Council for a bar manager's certificate. Interest has been shown from both local people and those involved in the ski/touristindustry. The next is planned for June. A certificate in food hygiene is another employment qualification and legislation is likely to enforce this as a pre-requisite for all workers in the food industry. Two six-hour modules have been set down for early June, with Wanganui Polytechnic tutor Gina Wagstaff conducting the classes. For keen W aimarino gardeners, a day spent with Wanganui Polytechnic expert David Aislable, will explore the mysteries of soil
building, essential nutrients and compost making. 'Buying or establishing a New Business' with tutor Erin Rennie will help students avoid the pitfalls of starting their own business. A shorter module on budgeting and financial management with tutor Marie Richards Hodge will help individuals stay ahead of their bills and enable them to help others to do the same. Local tutor Dawn Donaldson will give budding floral artists instruction on drying plant material and the creation of table centre pieces, basket arrangements and a topiary tree. Readers are invited'to submit suggestions for future courses with every endeavour being made to accommodate them. Phone Bev Kerr 3858-005 with ideas to ensure another full year of Wanganui Polytechnic Off-Campus activities.
