Putting in putting for punters
The installation of an 18-hole mini golf course at the Ohakune Motor Camp has had proprietor Noel Shepherd puttering about for months. Mr Shepherd started work on the first nine holes late last year with the intention of completing half of the course by Christmas. Unsettled Waimarino weather put paid to his plans, with the concrete being layed only in the last few weeks. The secOnd half of the course will be completed later in the year and may be adjusted depending on the success of the initial course. Mini-golf enthusiasts will initially be presented with two balls and allowed to play the nine holes twice until the completion of the course. A steep embankment to the left of the main gates that was difficult to mow Droved Derfect for the construction of
the course. Long-term plans include landscaping the area anddnstalling picnic tables and chairs for the comfort of players. A tentative cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children, with camp users playing half price. Mr Shepherd credits the idea of installing a mini golf course to Ohakune businessman Ron Walkley, who will also receive the honour of playing the first round. Since its inception Mr Shepherd says he has been innundated with inquiries as to its completion. Although keeping mum about the exact specifications of the course, Noel hinted that the entire course will be linked through a common theme - possibly with a local flavour - making it unique to this area.
