New face at Raetihi centre
The Raetihi Promotion Group welcomes Noeline Churton to the Raetihi Information Centre, and hopes she will carry on the standard set by the previous workers. Along with the task of running the information centre, Noeline takes on the job of Raetihi correspondent for the Ruapehu Bulletin. Noeline Churton has worked in Raetihi for several years, first at Reynolds Motors and then at Peach Cornwall and Partners accountants. Presently she is involved with the running of the Waimarino Club. Before coming to live in Raetihi five years ago, Noeline and family lived in Ohakune, making the road between Ohakune and Raetihi a very familiar stretch to her. The Raetihi Information Centre is seen as a credit to the town and many hours have been given voluntarily by members of the local community to make this venture an asset to the area. If anyone in the community who may have a little free time to give to the centre they are asked to get in touch with the centre, phone 3854 805. "Perhaps you are unable to help in this way but have knowledge of the area that you would be willing to pass
on, or have a leisure activity you are able to share with others. If so we'd like you to register this interest at the centre," said Noeline. 'This would then make the information centre the place to find out what is going on, what is available and where, making the centre a place for information to be collect and issued for the benefit of the whole community," she said. "Have you ever had the problem of who to get in touch with for an activity that you know is going on in the community but no matter who you ask you can't get the right contact? Well if all activities in the community could have those contact names available to the centre then you would have no problem." The local community is asked to support the centre in every way to make the centre more effective. "The tourists and visitors to the town do use the centre to get information onfishing, kayaking, canoeing, jetboating, scenic walks and drives, tramping and other activities that may be of interest to them. I'd like people to remember this is their home town and to think about how they would like it portrayed." The Information Centre offers the community services such as typing, sale of
cottage crafts or souvenirs, bookings for the Intercity buses, and sale of Whanganui River passes. The centre also has a good selection of secondhand books for sale or exchange. From these activties the centre gets much of its income. It is hoped that with the support of the community the centre could become self-sufficient, not
having to ask for donations or hand-outs. The Raetihi Promotions Group thanked Shelly Shearsby for her service to the Raetihi Information Centre over the past eight months and wish her all the best in her new position at Pricecutter. The Ruapehu Bulletin also wishes Shelly good luck and thanks her for her valuable efforts.
