Domestic violence arrests in Waiouru
WAIOURU POLICE FILE By Constable Chris scales After a long stretch of leave, the old fingers are getting a good work out on the typewriter for this week's Police file. Firstly, Pete and I would like to welcome our new constable to Waiouru, Constable Dale Jenkins who has transferred from Greymouth. Dale is married to Cathy and they have four children. He is a keen Rugby League man, so any league teams or scouts out there, Daleis your man. Pete has already briefed Dale on his first duties in Waiouru, that of an in-depth study of the Waiouru Penguin population. • It' s been a steady four weeks since our last police . report, beginning with that disastrous Labour Weekend with two terrible fatalities on our roads. Since then the roads have been fairly quiet
with several minor injury type accidents, the latest being on Saturday when an elderly woman suffered minor injuries after crashing near the railway crossing. • With the Christmas holiday season upon us, and plenty of parties going on, we urge everyone to take care if out driving. We will be hitting drink-driving heavily this festive season, and will have numerous check points around the area, and random stopping. Don' t have your Christmas spoilt by being caught over the limit. Use a safe driver, or utilise the community shuttles. • Over the last six or seven weeks, six locals have been arrested for domestic violence. This is very disturbing. We have also attended several other domestic disturbances, not resulting in arrests. Christmas has always been a time when extra stress is put on families, with
numerous Christmas parties and alcohol sometimes fuelling an already volatile family situation. I can't stress enough that if you are in this type of situation, please get help before someone gets hurt, or arrested. There are numerous agencies available to the community to help those in need, and these agencies can be contacted through us or the Waiouru Social worker. Taumarunui Women's Refuge & Support Centre will be available to offer support or advice to anyone
who needs to once a week in Waiouru. They have been offered premises in Waiouru to use on Thursday between 1pm and 3pm at the Waiouru Welcome Inn. Thanks to Barry Hodgson for making this venue available. • Those with firearms licences and with surnames beginning with A & B will begin to be called up in the New Year to be re-issued with the new firearms licences. Please have ready $65 and two passport size photographs when you
come in to the station. We now have a firearms vetting officer in Waiouru, so re-licensing should be able to be done quickly. The officer is Gordon Mottram, and he will be around the area carrying out inquiries with nominatedreferees. He will be identified by a Police ID card. # Have a safe week.
