Army trophy honours son's life

One family' s long standing relationship with the New Zealand Army has resulted in the presentation of a taiaha to the Regular Force Junior Non-Commissioned Officers Course. The taiaha will be retained at the Army Depot at Waiouru and be given to the winner of the Top Student Award on subsequent courses. The inaugural presentation last Thursday saw the taiaha won jointly by Lance Corporal Mark Brewer of the Signals Corps and Lance Corporal Shane Potaka of the SAS. The taiaha was given by the Diamond family of Hokianga who in turn represent the hapu of Ngati Wharora, Te Pouka and Ngati Korokoro. The taiaha was carried especially for presentation to the Junior NCO Course by Mr Mark Claracich of Hokianga. The taiaha bears the name 'Danny' in memory of Mr and Mrs Diamond' s son, one of four brothers who joined the army, who was killed in a motorcycle accident recently. The taiaha was blessed by both the Catholic and Anglican churches in Hokianga, as well as by the local Marae, Te Kaiwaha, and will hence remain a peaceful taiaha.
