Board sorts Waimarino wish list

The Waimarino Community Board allocated priorities to the list of submissions to the Ruapehu District Council' 1994-95 annual plan at their last meeting, although some of its members felt the effort would be wasted as therewould not be the money to fund the projects. "If there is only funding

for five or 10 percent of these projects then this is a waste of time," said board chairman Colin Webb. Board member John Compton (who is also a Ruapehu district councillor) said a council working party was looking at a funding system whereby the board would be allocated some rating and spending power,

so the exercise may be of benefit. He suggested they first categorise each item as "A", «B" or «£» pj-jority on a needs basis, then look at the spread among urban and mral areas to see if it was fair and then rank them 135 , "one being of paramount importance and 35 being 'who gives a monkey's'."

Mr Compton' s suggestion was ignored by the chairman and other members and after some delay, the board slowly categorised the items one by one, voting to extend the meeting almost an hour past its official closing time. Ellen Gould suggested items of safety should be highest priority. The priority list decided (highest first) was, 1 judder bars in Rimu Street Ohakune; 2 move Ruatiti Domain entrance; 3 Tainui St Ohakune, footpath; 4 Parapara and Hukuroa roads footpaths; 5 Pipiriki Road corners; 6 Ohura Road deviation; 7 Ranfurly Tce Raetihi, grit safety footpath; 8 widen corners Makakahi Road; 9 seal extension Middle Road; 10 seal Tawhero Tce Ohakune; 1 1 seal extension Burns Street Ohakune; 12 subsoil drainage Turoa Village; 13 NgapakahiRoadsealing; 14 new rubbish bins Ohakune; 1 5 new rubbish bins Raetihi; 16 mains water pressure gauge (fire station) Raetihi; 1 7 pedestrian safety barrier

Ohakune Primary School; 18 resurface Raetihi footpath (Seddon St); 19 kerb & channel Martin Place Ohakune; 20 study of street lighting problem Goldfinch - Mangawhero Ohakune; 2 1 SmithsRoad seal extension; 22 Raetihi Information Centre wages (up to $5000); 23 paint for Orautoha School; 24 Raetihi paving stones and town signs; 25 seal extension Rimu Street; 26 lights and sealing, Pitt Street sports field; 27 additional street cleaning urban areas; 28 extraordinary refuse collection Rangataua, Horopito and Pipiriki. The other items were either deleted from the list or not prioritised. Mayor Garrick Workman said the board should give a "clear message" to the council as to which projects must proceed and also indicate which, if any, should be tagged for reserves funds if they could not be funded from the general rate. However board members did not respond to his suggestion.
