Raurimu offers adventures for school holidays
Primary and secondary school-aged children with time on their hands these Christmas holidays are well catered for by Plateau Guides. Back by popular demand is their school holiday programme, catering for local children keen on the outdoors. Their adventure and horse-trekking weeks, both organised for January, provide child-centred activities, including horse riding, caving, abseiling, rafting and orienteering. Last summer' s programmes were well attended by children from Taumarunui and National Park, as well as Waimarino children. No prior outdoor skills are necessary, except a willingness to try something new. Children are required to bring a packed lunch, warm, dry clothing and togs. For equine enthusiasts, there is a separate horsetrekking programme that features a week of activities aimed at educating and entertaining. While at the mercy of the weather, the activities are adjusted to the capabilities of the individual child. The group aims to build up the childs' confidence and encourage them to take on new challenges as well as working as a team.
