Track update

□ Tongariro crossing / Tongariro northern circuit The snow base over the crossing has washed back with only a small amount left on the track. Red Crater is now clear of snow. To ensure a safe and pleasant trip, check weather conditions before you set out. Also remember the right clothing and equipment are essential: you will be travelling in an alpine area. □ Ngauruhoe summit Trampers must take particular care on Ngauruhoe. The route is mainly clear of snow. However care should be taken near the summit. Do not attempt to go on any areas of snow if you aren't equipped with alpine equipment unless you are certain that snow is soft. □ Mount Ruapehu People need to check the route to the Crater Lake. Also check the weather forecast and have suitable gear before attempting. Ice axe and crampons may be needed, dependent on snow conditions. □ Avalanche hazard Low hazard forecast until major weather changes. Also be aware of waterfall holes, schrunds and hollow snow bridges appearing. Take extreme care. Check out all slopes, including run out, before playing or sliding on them. Travel with care: safe route finding is always essential when travelling in the back country.
