Paving tops on Main St 'wish list'

Paving is at the top of the list of priorities for Raetihi outlined by representatives of the Raetihi . Main Street Committee at the monthly meeting of the Waimarino Community Board. Spokesperson Bernice Frost presented the board with the committee' s

'wish list', with paving - preferably cobblestones or paving stones, to create an effect similar to that of Taihape's main street - as top priority. In descending priority is: improved signage for the town, cleaning and landscaping of Raetihi's pond, and opening up of

'Lover's Lane' walkway. Mrs Frost said that an initial sum of $8000, followed by similar sums for the following two years would be sufficient to pave the entire lefthand side of Seddon Street, from '4-Square Corner' in Ward Street, to Duncan Street.

While some provision was made in last year's annual plan for Raetihi's main street, funds allocated were for tarsealing only. Of the rest of the committee' s 'wish list', board chairman Colin Webb sympathised but informed the group that all funding for the 1993/94 financial year up until 1 June has already been allocated. From front page Mr Webb told the committee that it is too early in the process of budgeting for the 1994/95 financial year for the board to make a commitment to the project. "It is unfortunate but there is a whole planning process that takes quite a considerable time", he said. Mayor Garrick Workman urged the board to decide soon, whether to back Raetihi 's Main Street programme. "It is an extremely important project ... I urge you as a board to make a decision as soon as you possibly can", he said. The committee asked the council to provide funds to drain and deepen Raetihi' s pond, plus re-

move offending willow trees. The committee told the board that $500 had been allocated to the purchase of trees, and suggested council match the amount. Another $800 is needed for landscaping. $1600 was costed out for time. For the provision of new signs at Raetihi 's major intersection, Mrs Frost said the commitee would provide $400 towards construction materials and labour. Councilapproved 'Welcome to Raetihi' signs similar to those at the entrances to Ohakune are to be placed at entrances to Raetihi, while Mrs Frost said the committee want "something that makes people stop, then go into town rather than driving straight past."
