Speech nights attract interest

BY MYRA CROWLEY At a recent meeting of the Ruapehu International Training in Communication, guest speaker Patrick O'Sullivan presented an explanation of the Tieke Hut protest. Mr O'Sullivan said the area concerned could become a "playground of the rich" and the issue was not a Maori one, rather one of ownership. The history of the claim dates back to 1892

when the area was a public domain. Members continue to meet fortnightly, with interesting and well thought out themes conducted by members including 'friendship is a sheltering tree', 'progress', 'achieve your goal', and 'facing the challenge'. Several members attended a Council 8 day in Taihape, with a number of the Manawatu's top communicators giving

their ideas on communicating with the community. There were thoughtprovoking comments from Presbyterian deaconess Aline Pengelly, Awatapu College assistant principal Waana Davies, Kelvin Ellery and Les Baty. A workshop conducted by Elwyn Sowry entitled 'members' responsibilities' was well received. Council 8 members attended a training day in Wanganui recently, with the theme 'it's up to me'.
