MMP advocated

• The Shirtcliffes (especially the prettier one) seem obsessed with the prospect of a diminished access to members of parliament under MMP. They seem to believe that under the present system, by virtue of some shared geographical quirk, our MP's are motivated to represent, assist, be accountable to (to use the trendy jargon), every citizen in their electoral area. Let's get real. Having voted in nine elections and almost as many electorates (and only once been represented by the person for whom I voted), I stopped believing in the caring/sharing capacity of one's local MP about the same time I stopped believing carrots would make me see in the dark. The problems faced by the people 1 know are to do with unemployment, poverty, education, health. The people from whom they seek accountability are the Cabinet Ministers responsible for current policies. A government that

fairly represents the voting public (ie MMP) would be a damn sight more use to them than a quartet of local electorate representatives.
