Police File

There was a noticable drop in the number of reported crimes in the Waimarino this week. • Police arrested a 40-year old male - a resident of National Park - after the vehicle he was driving left the road and • ran into a wire fence on Tohunga Road, just north of Ohakune township. The man was found to be excessively drunk. He will appear in the Ohakune District Court later this month to face drink-driving charges. • Police apprehended a person in Raetihi last week on a charge of driving while disqualified. The offender will appear in the Ohakune District Court this month.

Parents of Ohakune Kindergarten's preschoolers, plus staff, are turning an entrepreneurial hand to mass pizza production in their latest fund-raising drive. Some 1000 pizzas will be produced, retailing for $3 each. Around half that number will fill existing orders; additional pizzas may be purchased through the kindergarten. Two varieties - Hawaiian and the kindy's own 'Ruapehu' - are on offer. Also in circulation is

the kindergarten's Christmas raffle that has a first prize of groceries, with second and third prizes being chunky sandpit toys (the inside word is that parents purchasing the tickets have their sights set on winning one, or both of the wonderful toys, in preference to the groceries!) Ohakune Kindergarten's senior supervisor Yvonne Trigell expressed the gratitude of teachers and committee for the continuing support of the community.

Ihe bulk of funds raised go directly back into the kindergarten. Evidence of this is the facility's brand new fence and covered play area. Of the $26,000 required to run the kindergarten (this figure excludes staff salaries), only one third is Government subsidised. The remaining two thirds - some $17,000 - must be met through fund-raising. Some of the figure is met through parents' voluntary donations.
