Desert Rd fatality
Two fatalities occurred on the Desert Road during the Labour Day holiday weekend. The first accident occurred on Sunday night when a southbound vehicle crossed the dividing line and collided with a northbound vehicle, killing the driver, Mr Buskaran Gopal, 28, of Auckland. Three other passengers were flown to hospital, all in a serious condition. The , accident took place 15km north of Waiouru township.
The second fatality occurred 25 km north of Waiouru when a man changing a tyre on a moderate curve in the road was struck from behind by a southbound vehicle. The man, Jonathan Mark Williams, a resident doctor from Hawera Hospital was killed instantly. Four other passengers, travelling with Mr Williams were uninjured. The driver of the southbound vehicle also escaped injury. Inquests into both deaths are currently being conducted.
