Study wins landscape award

A landscape study that will help to eliminate conflict over recreational use of Tongariro and Erua forests has won the top Charlie Challenger award for written work in this year' s NZILA/Monier competition for landsfcape architecture. Developed by Hamilton landscape architects Colleen Priest and Dave Mansergh, the study covers the Department of Conservation's 40,000ha Tongariro and Eura forests. It will enable the department to balance recreational use of the land with the need to protect wildlife and the environment. Herwi Scheltus, landscape architect for the Tongariro Taupo conservancy, said the project was prompted by a conflict of interests between groups ranging from hunters and four-wheel drive enthusiasts to mountain bikers. "As one of New Zealand' s up and coming mountain bike trials, the area badly needed an overall management plan," he said. "This study should eliminate any future problems. By defining landscape types and taking all factors into account, it will enable our managers to determine which areas can safely accommodate particular kinds of recreational activity."
