River bylaws change delayed

Ruapehu District Councillors decided to delay beginning the Special Order procedure necessary to resolve the Whanganui River Control Bylaws ( 1 99 1 ) when they met for their monthly meeting in Taumarunui last Friday. At its September meeting Council resolved to delay confirmation of the revoking of the bylaws until its October meeting but when they met last Friday, they learned that it had not been possible for the Iwi Liaison Working Party to have undertaken the consultation in time. Council supports effort to lure summer trade The Ruapehu District Council is co-ordinating the ef forts of Ruapehu tourist operators in a campaign promot ing the region' s summer activities. Council marketing manager Bruce Rollinson has held t series of meetings and said that the commitment fron operators to market the region during the summer was veiy strong. The meetings were held to gain input from opera tors and build upon last year's effort which was the firs time the tourist activities of the entire District had beer combined in a.summer product, said Mr Rollinson. The council' s marketing plan has a budget of $10,00( for the campaign which has a total budget of $20,000 anc will go towards the production of a summer brochure, tc be distributed nation-wide and advertising features. Ihe remaining funds will come from participating operators. The aim of the promotion is to increase the number oi summer visitors. The summer trade is much less structiirec than the winter, when most visitors come for a single activity. Mr Rollinson said the attractions during summei are more diverse, focusing on the natural environment ir the region' s national and forest parks. The summer promotion will bring these activities together in a single, attfactive package for potential visitors.
