Forestry workers suspended in wake of market glut
A glut in the timber market has left Winstone Pulp International management no alternative but to suspend work gangs. General manager Dave Anderson told the Ruapehu Bulletin that there were indications last month of a timber glut caused by over supply by such markets as Chile and Russia. Mr Anderson said he is acutely aware of the impact of lay-offs on the
community and is optimistic that last week' s "scaling down of operations" will be sufficient to carry the mill through, with no further suspensions neeessary. The situation, he said, is under constant review. Winstone Pulp International, New Zealand' s smallest exporter, is following in the footsteps of timber giants Carter Holt Harvey and Forestry Corp: both companies recently layed off large numbers of work gangs in the wake of the market glut.
