Kokako Road access debate Thursday

The issue of public access to Kokako Road, near Ruatiti Road, will be revisited at the Waimarino Community Board meeting on Thursday night. Kokako Road is a paper road and is not formed at present and the landowner whose property it passes through, Garry Rawnsley, has asked that it be closed and an alternative route for trampers and horse riders be provided, along a boundary of his property. However, objection to the proposal has been voiced by neighbour Jim Davis and Public Access New Zealand Incorporated. The parties in the dispute are to be given the opportunity to state their case to the board at the meeting on Thursday. The council chief executive has approved a sign reading "Trampers Only - Kokako Road", to advise horse and motorcycle riders to stay off the road. An additional note reads "No Dogs or Guns Permitted on the Property of Ruatiti Wilderness" and Mr Rawnsley has asked that this read "No Dogs, No Guns, Ruatiti Wilderness". According to the council this implies that dogs or guns can't be taken onto the road. This condition cannot be applied to a public road, according to the council.
