Excellent skiing
There's plenty of spring snow and excellent skiing to be had on both sides of Mt Ruapehu these coming weeks. Whakapapa Over 5000 people visited the slopes of Whakapapa Skifield on Saturday, with a further 3700 visitors to the field on Sunday. Visibility proved to be a problem at times on Saturday, with vision reduced to 100 metres at times, clearing to unlimited at different stages during the day. The Whakapapa Slalom was held in the Te Heuheu Valley on Saturday, with some fast times recorded (see results this edition). Soft snow conditions meant the Haensli Cup scheduled for Sunday had to be cancelled. Turoa Turoa enjoyed cairn and warm spring weather on the weekend, with
around 5,500 visitors to the ski field. Saturday's Mumm Champagne Celebrity Ski Day was a huge success, with DB identity Carl Hansen taking out first place in the slalom. This week, and Turoa hosts the Interservices races today and Wednesday, with police, army, navy and airforce personnel taking part. Thursday, and the New Zealand Fire Fighter Ski Races kicks off, with two days of competition. The Powderzone Snowboard Race takes place this Saturday 25 September. While there are some great prizes up for grabs, the emphasis is on having a good time. Also on the weekend is the Diet Pepsi Bumper Sticker Giveaway promotion, with hosts handing out stickers throughout Saturday, with lucky numbers being drawn Sunday.
