Army skis

Soldiers from all over New Zealand paid a visit to Ruapehu last week to ski in the Army's annual inter-regional skiing competition. Twenty-four men and women competed in teams from the Army Training Group, Waiouru, Central Regions, Northern and Southem. Both the slalom and giant slalom courses were used. ATG was the eventual teams' winner over the two days of competition with Capt Duncan Femer from Northern winning the males' competition while Capt Jackie Arpin from ATG took out the best female skier award. Capt Arpin is an exchange officer from the United Kingdom currently in New Zealand on the Army's 'Long Look' programme. The best time recorded over the two days for the GS course was 33.17 seconds by Capt Femer. From the competition a team was selected to compete for the Army in the inter-service events being held this week. Other services competing are the Navy, the Air Force and the Police.
