Tumblers news
For most kids the last three weeks have meant holidays, but for the Wanganui Motors Turoa Tumblers competition squad it has been a time to demonstrate the hard work of T erm T wo On 28 August the junior boys' squad went to Dannevirke for the Hawkes Bay/Poverty Bay champs. George Williams and Brad Hays, competing in level four brought home the Silver medal for combined team score. Both qualified for level five with some very good consistent scores. Intensive use of video equipment leading up to the tournament proved beneficial in tightening up all exercises. (Temper trantrums from the coach at training may also have helped although this won't be repeated if he has to buy dinner again!) On the same day the girls' squad travelled to Tokoroa for the Waikato opens. The team was led by Eileen Voon and Sarah Lind in level five. They gained a team Bronze as well as both qualifying to level six for their next competition. Sarah scored 9.05 on the floor and 8.65 on beam which was first on this apparatus. Eileen was third on beam with 8.55 and second on vault with 8.9. In level four Cassie Nation and Louisa
McKay-Wood both bettered the qualifying standard to gain promotion to level five. This was outstanding as it was Louisa's first competition in level four. She scored 9.25 on beam. Fiona Lynch and Rebecca Lind pushed the other two hard all day but unfortunately just missed promotion by tenths of a point. In level three Krystal Abbott and Carolyn Mastrovich also gained promotion. Carolyn scored a 9 on the floor - a great pay-back for their parents who travel from Waiouru and National Park three times a week. On 3 and 4 September Warwick Hays competed at the New Zealand Senior Championships in Wellington. On Friday in a combined total competition Warwick was placed fourth overall. On Saturday, in an individual apparatus competition, he improved to third overall with a Silver medal on parallel bars and pommels and Bronze medals on high bar and floor. This confirmed his selection for the New Zealand team to travel to Australia on 27 September. Fund-raising The club is in the midst of a huge fundraising venture to try to get Warwick Hays to Melbourne as part of the
New Zealand team to compete at the Australian championships, from 27 September to 4 October. Warwick has done the hard work to gain selection and now must find $1,200 for the honour! The initial fundraising was given a huge kiek-off with donations from Ruapehu College Board of Trustees and a local businessman, Dave Scott. The club has been targeting hungry skiers with sausage sizzles outside New World on Saturday afternoons and Ohakune Tyres and Energy on Sunday afternoons. These are proving very popular but it will take a lot of sausages to get to Australia. Sports Country Ski Shop where Warwick works part-time has sponsored a raffle prize and this will be circulating soon. Angus Grimwade and Turoa Ski Resort have also donated raffle prizes. "Other raffles and events will also be happening in the next ,few weeks so if you can, please support us in our efforts to allow Warwick to fulfil his talent to the highest level", said club president Mark Hays, who can be called for further enquiries or donations.
