Domestic violence up

Recent increases in reported offences of domestic violence in Waiouru have been of serious concern to local police, so they are encouraging any victims to come forward immediately to try to solve the problems. Constable Chris Scales is adamant that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted but says that the police will also try to ensure that both the victim

and the offender receives the appropriate treatment. "It is a priority," he says "to change the attitude and behaviour of the offender." Neighbours and friends are also being encouraged to report any occurrences of domestic violence they believe are taking place. Any reports will be dealt with confidentially and anonymously if the person wishes.

The police have several avenues of procedure in these cases. They include prosecution without complaint, where the police may take an offender to court on the sole basis of evidence they have seen without the victim making a complaint or giving evidence. The police are also able to seize firearms from the home and place Domestic Protection Orders on the offenders.

A Victim Support member is also contacted in Waiouru and may be especially useful immediately following an incident or complaint. The Victim Support member may be contacted through the police station, in complete confidence. Constable Scales encourages any person not to be apathetic, "nor to be frightened or scared to come forward with information."
