Vitality

1989 saw a "greater vitality and vibrancy" in the artworks exhibited, according to patron Bill Taylor. Entries were up to 185 paintings, with Pat McGovern given the

premier award with "Business Houses" and "Just Looking". Ohakune painter Bev Kerr won the local prize with "Whakapapanui". Wanganui artist Kay Palmer with her oil painting "Fearnlea Interior". Wellington artist Shona McFarlane judged the 140 paintings. Brian Carmody again judged the Awards in 1991, choosing a number of local artists for awards including Denis Fryer's entry in the open class and Luci Harrison's "Wild Daisies" for the Waimarino District Award. Taupo artist Mervyn Turner took the premier award with "Ruapehu Landscape". A very lively, provocative display was how art judge Peter Coates (television director) described the 1992 entries. Andre Noffz of Wairakei won the premier award with "Artist's Imagination", and Denis Friar won the Waimarino award. "Art is not like sport where there is a clear winner and loser," said Mr Coates.
