POLICE FILE

By

Constable Chris

Scales

• Domestic violence appears to be rearing its ugly head in Waiouru more frequently these days. It is often aggravated by alcohol, and can leave the victims physically or emotionally damaged. Family violence will not be tolerated by police and we will have no hesitation in arresting and prosecuting offenders. We now have a victim support member in Waiouru, who is available to help domestic violence victims. The Victim Support group works closely with us and is available to offer assistance and advice to anyone in the community who fears family domestic violence and for any other matters that they may be referred to. If there is anyone in the community who fears family domestic violence, the VictimSupport member cari be contacted through the Police Station. Every referral to Victim Support is treated confidentially. WE CAN HELP. Treatment can also be provided for the offender to change his or her attitude and behaviour. • Wind, rain, sleet and snow kept down numbers attending the Cold Kiwi weekend at the Desert Road summit. About half of the expected 2500 tumed up. • Another venue held in Waiouru attracted about 800 motorcycle enthusiasts. Extra police were brought in from around the district to cope with both venues, but there were no incidents reported apart from noise complaints, and we were extremely pleased with the crowd behaviour at both venues. • Over the weekend a 41 -year old man was arrested and is facing several drug-related charges, including possession of cannabis for supply. He will appear in the Taihape District Court later this month.

In the past two weeks, the HMNZS Irirangi Social Club, south of Waiouru, was broken into and a large quantity of alcohol stolen from the bar. Members of the public have been forthcoming in information relating to this burglary, but we would appreciate further information. We believe that the burglary was committed by locals, and I'm sure that you will agree that locals stealing from locals is not on. Help us to solve this offence. Any information relating to this burglary will be kept confidential if wished. • A local man has already been arrested for assault relating to domestic violence. With the help of Victim Support, and Police, this situation is well on the way to being resolved. • We are still policing drink driving in Waiouru quite heavily. Large numbers of people are being stopped and breath tested with the sniffer and it is pleasing that as yet no one in Waiouru is facing any drink driving related charges. Expect to be stopped anytime and tested. Don't be the first to get caught. • Our Crime Prevention night is on Wednesday 8 September at 7.30pm at the Waiouru School Hall. I would like to see all the Waiouru business people, and any members of other organisations that wish to attend. Topics to be discussed will be crime prevention, security of your premises and any other concerns of mutual interest. The crime prevention officer from Wanganui will be in attendance, as well as a security expert to advise anyone on effective security alarms, or how best to safeguard your premises from burglary etc. The Waiouru Firemaster will also brief the business community on fire safety. We will then set up a business community watch. See you there. • Watch the roads if travelling during the school break, and have a safe week.
