Fatal crash attracts national attention
Police believe alcohol may have contributed to the fatal collision 5km east of Ohakune last week, that claimed the lives of six local people. Three men and two women in a Ford Falcon were killed outright, and a fourth man was transferred to Wanganui Hospital with serious injuries. The sole occupant of the second vehicle was killed instantly. Those killed were John Francis Henare Kingi, 45; Cindy Kariroa, 19; Tina Goff, 27; Thomas Martin, 36; Otis Wynyard, 25; and Robin Ian Rowles, 45 (see obit-
uary this edition of the Bulletin ) Thirty-one year old Brian Ruke was reported to be in a serious condition in Wanganui Hospital. Investigations by automotive experts and police into the crash are still to be completed, with a public inquest to be held sometime in the next few weeks. The accident drew interest from all over the country, with all major newspapcrs, television and radio running reports and updates on the crash and its aftermath through the week.
