You're welcome on the wild side

Imagine skiing with no queues, paying $25 for a lift ticket, and having lots of space on the slopes. Well you could wait until spring and ski Turoa or Whakapapa (minus the $25 lift ticket that is). Or you could ski Tukino - the wild side of the mountain. While Tukino Skifield is run by a handful of ski clubs and is usually only enjoyed by club members and a handful of keen ones, the field is open to anyone. This is contrary to popular belief - we at the Bulletin even thought it was so (see Ruapehu Snow Bulletin, August is-

sue). But we were soon put right. All you need is a four wheel drive vehicle to get you up the rough track, or the -price of a seat on Dempsey's bus, which leaves from Ohakune. The field has three rope tows, four instructors, and a ski patrol. You may have thought the field is open just weekends - but this also isn't true. The season is almost as long as the two commercial fields, opening weekends in July, and seven days August through to the end of October.
