Ski Shed

Ohakune's Ski Shed has known more than one home in its 20 years of operation. The first Ruapehu branch was opened at National Park in 1977 where the Ski Haus is now. Managing the business was present day owner, Ian Heappey. They moved to Ohakune in 1978 with the opening of Turoa Skifield and operated from Clyde Street. After a year the present site was bought, converted to a ski shop. Skis for hire numbered 200 sets, slowly growing to 400 by 1984. Ian left the business after the 1984 ski season and in 1985 set up the Turoa Skifield ski hire on the mountain, then Nobby's Ski Hire. The business was ( managed by Graeme Holland (the current Ski Shed ski hire manager), until an amalgamation of the two businesses formed the current qperation with Graeme and Ian as directors. Hire equipment has increased to 850 sets with the majority of the gear being near new. The growth has been based on offering personal service to customers and supplying ski hire equipment that is kept in tip-top condition. All skis are meticulously serviced before they leave the shop, and all boots are checked for damage and dryness.
